A cone-beam CT1 captures your teeth, jawbone, jaw joints, sinuses, and upper airway in three dimensions in about five seconds. Dr. Liatti uses an i-CAT CBCT as a standard part of his diagnostic process — every patient, every first visit.

What the 3D scan lets Dr. Liatti see

A single CBCT scan gives Dr. Liatti more than any combination of traditional x-rays. He can measure the actual widths of the upper and lower jaws, see the real volume of your airway, examine the surfaces of your jaw joints from any angle, find impacted or missing teeth still hiding in the bone, and identify skeletal asymmetries invisible on a flat image. The same scan generates the traditional panoramic and cephalometric views too — so one five-second capture replaces multiple separate x-rays.

About the radiation

Any x-ray involves some radiation, and we take that seriously. The i-CAT is a modern, low-dose unit, and every adult scan is captured on a low-dose protocol. For children, Dr. Liatti uses a separate pediatric setting that reduces the dose even further — because a child isn't a small adult, and the scan settings shouldn't treat them like one.23

The iTero is a small wand that builds a full 3D model of your teeth and bite in a few minutes — no trays, no putty, no gag reflex — and it's far more accurate than the old goopy impressions. Dr. Liatti uses the digital model to plan tooth movement, design Invisalign trays, set up indirect bonding, make retainers, and fabricate other appliances like expanders.

It's comfortable enough that kids who've never been scanned before handle it easily, which is why it's replaced traditional impressions for almost everything we do.

Bracket position — by fractions of a millimeter — changes everything that happens afterward. When Dr. Liatti determines that precise bracket placement is critical to the case, he places the brackets virtually on a 3D model of your teeth with the finished result in mind, then transfers those exact positions into your mouth all at once using a custom tray. The wires do more of the work on their own, which means more efficient treatment with better results.

Having a 3D printer in the office means we make study models, indirect bonding trays, and the models our clear retainers are formed over — all in-house. If you need a replacement retainer, we print it here instead of sending it to an outside lab. If an appliance needs adjustment, the turnaround is days instead of weeks. Instead of the elastic ties traditional braces use to hold the wire in place, self-ligating braces have a small built-in door — less friction, fewer places for plaque to hide, and often fewer adjustment visits. Dr. Liatti uses them when they're the right fit for the case. For some patients, he'll recommend traditional braces or Invisalign instead — the right tool is the one matched to your case, not the one with the best marketing.

All options — metal (silver), clear (ceramic), and gold (champagne) — are the same fee. No upcharge for choosing a less visible option.

What is a CBCT scan and why do orthodontists use it?
CBCT stands for cone-beam computed tomography. It’s a 3D x-ray that captures your teeth, jawbone, jaw joints, sinuses, and upper airway in a single five-second scan. Dr. Liatti uses a CBCT as part of every first-visit evaluation because it shows anatomy that a standard x-ray cannot — airway volume, jaw joint surfaces, the exact widths of the upper and lower jaws, impacted teeth, and skeletal asymmetries that are invisible on a flat image.
What is the difference between a CBCT scan and a regular dental x-ray?
A regular dental x-ray (panoramic) produces a flat, two-dimensional image. It shows the general position of teeth and bone but compresses three-dimensional anatomy into a single plane, so structures overlap and hide behind one another. A CBCT scan produces a full three-dimensional volume that Dr. Liatti can rotate, slice, and measure from any angle. It also generates the traditional panoramic and lateral cephalometric views from the same data — so one scan replaces multiple separate x-rays while adding dimensions a panoramic can never show.
Is a CBCT scan safe? How much radiation is involved?
Any x-ray involves some radiation, and we take that seriously. The i-CAT is a modern, low-dose unit, and every adult scan is captured on a low-dose protocol. For children, Dr. Liatti uses a separate pediatric setting that lowers the dose further. We follow the ALARA principle — keeping radiation as low as reasonably achievable — and only take a scan when it will actually change the diagnosis or the treatment plan.
Does insurance cover a CBCT scan?
At Encinitas Orthodontics there’s no separate charge for the CBCT scan — it’s included in your free first visit, so there’s nothing to bill to insurance for the scan itself. If you move forward with treatment, your 3D records are part of your case, and we’ll review any orthodontic insurance benefits with you at that point.
How much does a CBCT scan cost at Encinitas Orthodontics?
There is no separate charge. The CBCT 3D scan, iTero digital scan, and clinical photos are all included in every free first visit at Encinitas Orthodontics. If you start treatment, the diagnostic records stay with your case at no additional cost. If you don’t start treatment, you still keep the records from your visit — there is no bill either way.
