Clear Retainers
A thin, transparent tray that fits precisely over the teeth — nearly invisible when worn. Clear retainers hold teeth in all three dimensions, which is why Dr. Liatti recommends them in most cases. The models are made in-house using 3D printing. Your first set is included; ask about the Premium Retainer Package for built-in backups.
Hawley Retainers
The classic wire-and-acrylic retainer. A metal wire wraps around the front of the teeth while a custom acrylic plate sits against the palate or behind the lower teeth. Durable, adjustable, and well-suited for certain bite situations. Included with treatment.
Bonded (Permanent) Retainers
A thin wire permanently cemented to the back of the front teeth — usually the lower six. You can't see it or remove it. It provides continuous retention without relying on compliance, a strong option for the lower anterior teeth where relapse risk is highest. Included with treatment.
Night Guards
For patients who clench or grind, Dr. Liatti can provide a custom night guard that also functions as a retainer — protecting both the teeth and the result. This eliminates the need to choose between a retainer and a guard. Available for an additional fee.

Dr. Liatti's recommendation is based on the type of treatment completed, the original problem, the patient's bite, and whether grinding or clenching is part of the picture. A patient with significant lower crowding, for example, might hear a recommendation for a bonded wire plus a clear retainer on top. A patient who finished Invisalign with a stable bite may hear that clear retainers alone are enough.
But preference matters too. Some patients don't want a permanent wire. Others don't like the feel of acrylic. Some want the simplest possible option. Dr. Liatti walks through the tradeoffs so you can make an informed choice — not just follow a prescription.

Your wear schedule depends on your individual case, the type of treatment you had, and the retainer you chose. Hawley (traditional) retainers are generally worn full-time at first and then tapered to nighttime wear over time. Clear retainers typically start at closer to half-time wear and taper to nights as well. Dr. Liatti will set a schedule specific to you and adjust it as your follow-up visits confirm stability.
What stays consistent across every case: your retainer only works when you wear it. A retainer sitting in its case isn't holding anything in place. The patients who keep the best long-term results are the ones who make retention part of their routine — the same way brushing is.
If it feels tight
If a retainer feels tight when you put it in, that's a signal the teeth have started to shift. Wearing the retainer consistently will usually guide them back — but if the fit changes significantly, contact the office. It's far easier to address a small shift early than to correct a larger one later. Dr. Liatti checks retainer fit at follow-up visits; if a bonded wire loosens or a clear retainer cracks, replacements can be made quickly — another reason the in-house 3D printing matters.
Caring for your retainer
Basic care keeps your retainer lasting longer: store it in its case whenever it's not in your mouth, and keep it away from heat — direct sunlight, hot car dashboards, and hot water can warp the material. Clean it with lukewarm water and mild dish soap rather than toothpaste, which can scratch the surface. Once a week, soak it for 15 minutes in a denture cleaning solution to keep it fresh.
